Where to Buy Public Transport Tickets in Italy

Where to Buy Tickets in Italy

Italy offers various transportation options

You can buy tickets from:

  • Official Apps (ATM Milano, Roger, GTT TO Move, Tabnet, etc.)

  • Metro Stations – Ticket machines available with English

  • Tabacchi Shops – Look for the blue “T” sign

  • Newsstands & Some Bars

Ticket Validation & Validity

Once you buy a ticket, it is not active until you validate it:

  • On buses/trams: Use the small yellow or green machine inside the vehicle.

  • In metro stations: Insert the ticket at the turnstile.

  • For digital tickets (apps): Activate it just before boarding.

After validation, a standard urban ticket is usually valid for:

  • 90 minutes in most cities (e.g., Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome)

  • Unlimited transfers within that time — but no return trips on the same route.

Tip: Always check the back of the ticket or the app to see the exact rules in your city.
